What Is Fique? The Colombian Fiber Behind VERDI's Rugs

Long before it becomes a rug that anchors a room, VERDI's story begins with a plant. Fique — a fiber drawn from an agave native to the Colombian Andes — is the foundation of nearly everything the studio makes. Sustainably harvested in Curití, Santander, it is the thread that connects a finished piece back to the mountains where our craft was born.

A fiber with deep roots

Fique has been cultivated in Colombia for generations, historically spun into coffee sacks and rope. It was precisely this humble material that VERDI's founding weaver, Carlos Vera Dieppa, reimagined in the 1990s. Working on manual looms alongside a local coffee-sack weaver, he saw in fique something no one else did: the raw material for a new language of luxury.

Why VERDI weaves with fique

Three qualities make fique extraordinary in the hands of a master artisan:

  • Strength and structure. Fique holds its form beautifully, allowing our weavers to build rugs and wall panels with lasting body and definition.
  • A natural, earthen character. Its texture and tone carry the warmth of the Andes — the "earthen" half of VERDI's signature contrast between natural fiber and luminous metal.
  • Sustainability at the source. As a rapidly renewable, hand-harvested fiber, fique lets us pursue exceptional craft without compromising the land it comes from.

Where the earthen meets the luminous

What transforms fique from tradition into a VERDI piece is what happens next on the loom. Around the year 2000, Carlos began interweaving natural fibers with metal threads — copper, stainless steel, and gold- and silver-plated filaments. That contrast, earthen fiber against luminous metal, remains the foundation of every VERDI weave. Fique provides the soul and structure; the metal catches the light.

A single Colombian thread

Today, close to fifty master weavers in our Bogotá atelier work fique alongside alpaca, plantain fiber, yaré, and organic silk. Yet fique remains the anchor — the fiber that ties each custom rug, wallcovering, and collectible piece back to a single belief: that exceptional, sustainable craft is today's ultimate luxury.
